Microfiber cloths are essential tools for car care: they touch paintwork, windows, plastics, rims, etc. It is therefore crucial to choose the right type, depending on the use, and to understand technical terms such as GSM or edge quality. Here's how to navigate it.




What is GSM?


  • The term GSM means grams per square meter: it's the weight of the fabric per surface area.

  • Generally, the higher the GSM, the thicker, denser, and more absorbent the fabric.

  • However, beware: a high GSM does not automatically guarantee the best quality. The type of fibers, weave, actual density, and finishes also matter.

For example:


  • A 500-600 GSM cloth is ideal for drying or wiping a quick detailer.

  • A 350 GSM cloth can work very well for removing wax or spray.

  • For windows, a lighter cloth prevents streaks and overly long fibers.




Stitching, edges & finishes


  • Cloths can have "stitched" (over-lock) or "edgeless/cut" (no visible edge, laser or ultrasonic cut) edges.

  • For paintwork and sensitive surfaces: prioritize ultrasonic cut or "edgeless" edges to avoid any rigid stitching that could scratch.

  • For general or interior use: a stitched edge is still acceptable.

  • Color tip: to avoid cross-contamination, assign a different color to each use (red = paint, yellow = windows, green = plastic, etc.). This helps maintain good hygiene and prevent micro-scratches.
